Our Trainers

Patrick Jones

Patrick has been working with Fred since the mid-nineties and giving workshops since 2006. Since Fred retired in 2014, Patrick has been our lead trainer. He has a Masters of Education from UC Santa Cruz and was a secondary teacher many years, as well as Director of Title I. He was also a long-time girls and boys varsity basketball coach. He has worked side-by-side with Dr. Jones to produce all of the materials you find on this site, including Tools for Teaching and The Study Group Activity Guide.

Dr. Matt Bergles

Matt Bergles has been teaching for 37 years in public and private schools. He has experienced nearly every conceivable scenario that Tools for Teaching equips teachers to effectively handle. He has taught pre-school, elementary, middle and high school as well as university undergraduate and graduate students. He was a long-time high school football coach and holds a Ph.D. in Public Affairs. Matt is also a professional mediator/facilitator who mediates disputes between neighbors as well as citizens and police officers. He has authored two books about wildlife - Endangered Species Policy Implementation (Lambert, 2009), a study of wildlife policy implementation concerning private lands; and Larry Saves the Prairie (Merry Dissonance Press, 2015), an illustrated children’s book about Larry Haverfield, a Kansas rancher who took on “the system” to do what he felt was right for native wildlife. Additionally, he has published articles in Endangered Species Update, a policy journal.

Kim Marshall

Kim Marshall was sixth-grade teacher, central office curriculum director, and elementary principal in the Boston Public Schools for 32 years. Since 2002, Kim has provided one-on-one coaching for principals, mostly in New York City in affiliation with New Leaders (www.newleaders.org), a non-profit that recruits, trains, and supports urban principals.

In addition, Kim consults, speaks, and teaches courses for school leaders, with a special focus on teacher supervision and evaluation, time management, the effective use of student assessments, and curriculum unit design (in collaboration with Jay McTighe and Associates).

Kim is the author of a number of articles and books, including Rethinking Teacher Supervision and Evaluation (Jossey-Bass, second edition, 2013). Kim also writes The Marshall Memo, a weekly summary of helpful articles for principals, teachers, superintendents, and other educators (www.marshallmemo.com). Kim is married and has two children, both teachers.
